Relax

Can we hold off on the Alcides Escobar as the future SS talk for a moment? I'll admit that I've been guilty of wanting to see what he can offer - especially after reading Haudricourt's rave reviews on JSOnline this spring.

Baseball Prospectus weighed in yesterday, placing Escobar in the "Don't Believe the Hype" category and after looking at his numbers I have to agree with them.

While he is still young, he has shown no ability to draw walks and slugs in the mid .300s - not good. I enjoy good defense as much as the next guy, but as far as prospects go Escobar is not the next Braun or Fielder...or even the next JJ Hardy. If he is able to contribute as a replacement should JJ go down, or even as a Craig Counsel type player - fine, but lets keep that as our expectations on not start evaluating Hardy's future trade value.

Am I wrong in feeling that Escobar feels like a slightly weaker hitting/better defensive Tony Gwyn Jr.?

haudricourt was raving about him on the radio today, basically saying he's very close to being a major league player and the brewers are going to have to make a decision when he is. he said he's a natural shortstop and shouldn't be moved, but obviously something would have to happen because there would be a logjam in the infield. decisions, decisions...

Just to clarify, I have no problem with the talk of Escobar being a major league player in a COUPLE years...but why does Haudricourt have a hard on for him right now?

Had a .668 OPS in AA last year. That is god awful and I'm almost embarrased that Haudricourt thinks he is near major league ready.

Lets see if he can improve in the minors the next couple years - he is young- and then we can talk about him in the majors.
